The state of Rhode Island is suggesting using federal COVID-19 funds to pay off unpaid outstanding medical bills. Under the proposal, the state could purchase the debt for pennies on the dollar using American Rescue Plan Act funds and then eliminate the debt entirely for certain Rhode Island residents. New York City has also been successful in writing off medical bills for people who can’t afford to pay them. Some people still have bills that are not being written off, potentially depending on their financial situation.
